Liverpool’s Housing Stock — We Know Every Era

Liverpool’s inner suburbs are dominated by the Victorian and Edwardian terrace — the characteristic two-up two-down with its Welsh slate roof, shared party wall chimney and a construction logic that has served well for over a century, provided the details are maintained. Welsh slate needs careful matching when replacement is required. Party wall chimneys serving multiple properties simultaneously need particular skill and consideration. These are not challenges that resolve themselves with a few years’ experience.

Further out, the picture changes. The large Edwardian and inter-war semis of Allerton, Woolton, Wavertree and West Derby have their own roofing characteristics — often still on original rafter and purlin structures that need proper assessment before any re-roofing decision. The 1930s estates brought concrete and clay interlocking tiles. The 1960s and 70s housing added flat-roofed extensions, porch canopies and garage roofs that are now coming to the end of their original felt life and need replacing with modern systems.

Outer estates — Croxteth, Speke, Belle Vale and Netherley are largely post-war and later housing, where flat-roofed extensions, porch canopies and garage roofs are now commonly reaching the end of their original felt life and need GRP replacement.
